What is the difference between Freshwater Pearls and Cultured Pearls?
Cultured simply means farmed. Our Freshwater Pearls are grown using freshwater mussels in slow moving rivers and lakes, they come in a variety of colours and shapes, and they have a dewy look. Although our Freshwater Pearls are farmed (cultured) it is generally farmed Saltwater Pearls, which are more commonly known as Cultured Pearls. These are mainly farmed in Australia and Asia. There are two main types of saltwater pearls, Tahitian pearls and Akoya pearls. These generally command a higher price point than freshwater pearls. They are more round in shape and have an incredible lustre, these gem-quality pearls embody high luxury. Natural South Sea Pearls are the rarest type of pearl.
Both Freshwater and Saltwater pearls are beautiful in their own way and have different things to offer jewellery lovers.
